On purpose?

So it could well be that the leaning poles were "on purpose".
It looks as if the lines would have been in the way of the pile driver.

OOPS!

Seems that today the bridge crew installed a "tilt" in the utility poles.
Notice the pole leaning to the right in the upper right corner of this shot.

Makes me think someone ran into something.
You can actually see 2 of them leaning way to the right in this shot.

Meanwhile, this is how the new bridge is coming along.

Monday morning and they are back at work!

They are at work on the bridge.
I shall try and get a shot later today.

Meanwhile, later today ...

Friday, Aug 23rd

Well, as of 2:50pm this site was totally abandon.

I don't know if anyone was here earlier in the day but I had someone tell me they thought they saw the crane in a different spot this morning.

GREAT NEWS !!!!

Aug 21st, 12 noon - I just talked with Mr. Renfroe and he said about an hour ago they got the approval from ALDOT to go ahead with the project!

A small crew is on scene now trying to pump out some holes and get the site back in order.
Work should start moving forward tomorrow or Friday.

The next question is "how long"?
They hope to have the road opened back up by Thanksgiving.
That WOULD be something to celebrate!

THIS JUST IN ...

As of 5pm today the large red crane has been moved from the field to creek bank.

What will tomorrow bring? A community waits with held breath.

Time marches on. 25 days ...

August 20th, 11am - 25 Days since any work was done on the new bridge.
The "Storage Neighbor" would very much like you to know that they ARE OPEN for business.

Who knew that bridge contractors would be such quiet neighbors?

24 days and NO sign of workers.

If you're like me you are looking at these photos and thinking, "They all look the same".
That is because nothing is moving. Nothing IS changing.

It has now been at least 24 days since any sign of bridgework has been done.

Aug 16th, 21 days and no progress

It has been 21 days since I started watching for work on this site.
Still it sits idle.
Apparently awaiting design approval from ALDOT.

Still Waiting for STATE Approval !!!

August 15th, 20 days since I had seen any progress being made on the new bridge.

I decided it was time to make some calls.

I talked with Phil Renfroe in Madison County's engineering department.

According to him, the project is on hold while awaiting for approval for one part of the bridge plan from the Alabama Department of transportation.

He said that the County had gone to great lengths NOT to start the project until they had been told they had everything they needed to go ahead and finish it. In fact, some of you may remember that they had announed they were going to close it and even set the barricades out but then didn't close it off for another week or so. This was because they were waiting for everything to be ready.

Once again, according to Mr. Renfroe, the county was told by the consultants hired to oversee this project, "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" (256) 533-1484) that everything was approved and ready to go. Reed Contracting Service was then given the go ahead to remove the bridge.

After the bridge was removed, the county was then told they did NOT actually have approval of all of the plans for the new bridge.

So now we are waiting for someone from the Alabama Department of Transportation to approve of the bridge plans and have been waiting for more than a month. Even after this project has been on the boards for YEARS.

Mr. Renfroe was not able to tell me who had failed in their job when the County was told that everything WAS approved.

It can only be assumed that either "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" failed to get all the necessary aprovals or that the some one person at ALDOT changed their mind.

What does seem clear is that none of those individual human beings will be the least bit inconvenienced by their failure to correctly do their job. The same can't be said for thousands of us in the Monrovia area.

If the someone from ALDOT or "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" would like to clear their name and tell us who IS responsible for blocking this MAJOR artery BEFORE having the approval to go on, they should let us know. I for one would be happy to share that information.

Why did they remove the bridge and then stop work ?

After they closed Blake Bottom Road at Jeff Road and then removed the existing bridge, I noticed that work came to a complete halt.

Starting July 26th, 2013 I started keeping careful watch of the project for any signs of life.
For 17 more days it sat completely idle. Two large excavators and one crane all parked in exactly the same spot.
On August 13th, I noticed an excavator re-arranging some rocks. I would guess he was trying to reduce the erosion to the new banks that had been carefully carved out a month prior.

That was it though. Nothing added.
