Still Waiting for STATE Approval !!!

August 15th, 20 days since I had seen any progress being made on the new bridge.

I decided it was time to make some calls.

I talked with Phil Renfroe in Madison County's engineering department.

According to him, the project is on hold while awaiting for approval for one part of the bridge plan from the Alabama Department of transportation.

He said that the County had gone to great lengths NOT to start the project until they had been told they had everything they needed to go ahead and finish it. In fact, some of you may remember that they had announed they were going to close it and even set the barricades out but then didn't close it off for another week or so. This was because they were waiting for everything to be ready.

Once again, according to Mr. Renfroe, the county was told by the consultants hired to oversee this project, "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" (256) 533-1484) that everything was approved and ready to go. Reed Contracting Service was then given the go ahead to remove the bridge.

After the bridge was removed, the county was then told they did NOT actually have approval of all of the plans for the new bridge.

So now we are waiting for someone from the Alabama Department of Transportation to approve of the bridge plans and have been waiting for more than a month. Even after this project has been on the boards for YEARS.

Mr. Renfroe was not able to tell me who had failed in their job when the County was told that everything WAS approved.

It can only be assumed that either "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" failed to get all the necessary aprovals or that the some one person at ALDOT changed their mind.

What does seem clear is that none of those individual human beings will be the least bit inconvenienced by their failure to correctly do their job. The same can't be said for thousands of us in the Monrovia area.

If the someone from ALDOT or "Goodwyn, Mills, and Cawood" would like to clear their name and tell us who IS responsible for blocking this MAJOR artery BEFORE having the approval to go on, they should let us know. I for one would be happy to share that information.
